Besides my passion for music, I'm also interested in films. For some time now I was thinking a way to combine these two as a new feature for Downtuned magazine. After a lot of thought, I found it a good idea to start creating custom soundtracks for some of my favorite films. And that's how this column was born. It's in my plans to extend it by asking from bands or even from webzine's friends to compile one for a movie they like. But for now you can check and perhaps enjoy my first try. Since it was my first attempt, I can't really say if the result is satisfying at all. Therefore any thoughts/suggestions are always welcome...
So I present you the first custom soundtrack for one of the most well-known cult films, the Japanese "Tetsuo: The Iron Man". Released in 1989, Tetsuo is a low-budget, cyber-punk film by Shinya Tsukamoto. Few things about the plot: "A strange man known only as the "metal fetishist", who seems to have an insane compulsion to stick scrap metal into his body, is hit and possibly killed by a Japanese "salaryman", out for a drive with his girlfriend. The salaryman then notices that he is being slowly overtaken by some kind of disease that is turning his body into scrap metal, and that his nemesis is not in fact dead but is somehow masterminding and guiding his rage and frustration-fueled transformation". Because I don't consider myself capable for reviewing a movie, you can find a very interesting review right here.
I first saw this film, little over ten years ago. As you can imagine I was quite "shocked" from the intense and graphic atmosphere, leading me to watch it again a lot of times... And each time I enjoyed more this hyperkinetic monster. I'm not going to get you bored by writing the reasons why you should check it since the above mentioned review summarizes them pretty good.
As for the soundtrack, as I wrote, it's my first attempt but I think I managed it quite well. It has a lot of Japanese acts in it as you might be expected. It features 14 tracks with a total duration of 67 minutes and 21 seconds (film's runtime is 67 minutes...). I hope you'll enjoy it...
